Actually you can mark them all first and then delete them all by clicking on merge/delete once more.

I use the Olifant software from Okapi. Olifant is straightforward and quick.

Characters Counting in Segment

Hi there,

I am working on a subtitling project where the translations cannot exceed 40 characters. I am trying to set up some regex in the QA settings Regex tab to define some rules that would give me an error if the number of character is higher than the limit allowed.

The other thing to mention is that each segment may be divided using \N. I am allowed 40 characters before this tag and 40 characters after this tag, i.e. up to 80 characters per segment, but never more than 40 for each part of the segment.

I have set up my QA settings as follows but it doesn't seem to be working.

[url removed]

The Regex I wrote are:

\N[aA-zZ,\.-/d/s?!]{40,100}$
^[aA-zZ,\.-/d/s?!]{40,100}\N

Does anyone have experience with this regex tab and could tell me what i am doing wrong?

Thank you,
Sarah

MemoQ very kindly replied even though I do not have a maintenance agreement.

Please stop memoQ and go to the following path:
c:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\MemoQ\
Then delete the following file:
Preferences-lookup.xml

Then start memoQ and see if the issue still happens.

It worked!

Syncing (offline) MemoQ projects | Dropbox will do the trick

Install Dropbox on both computers.
Create a folder named "memoQ TMs" and a folder named "memoQ Term bases" inside Dropbox folder on both computers. Make sure you use the same version of the memoQ program on both machines. Run memoQ on one of the computers, open "memoQ Options" and then "Locations". Specify the path on Resources tab for Translation memories and Term bases. Do the same for the second computer. The paths on the both computers must point at the same folders, namely "memoQ TMs" and "memoQ Term bases" inside Dropbox folder, although the drives may differ, but it must look like ...\Dropbox\memoQ TMs and ...\Dropbox\memoQ Term bases.
You can do the above procedure for other folders, such as memoQ Projects, LiveDocs corpora, Muses and Light resources. Now you're all set for synchronization. You can start working on one PC with Dropbox on and synchronizing constantly, then turn on the other PC, launch Dropbox, wait for the Dropbox synchronization to complete, open the memoQ project and all your translated segments will be there. As you understand, it's very important to have Dropbox always running and synchronizing data with the server.

This is exactly the procedure I have been using for many years. The only thing is I found the path to the folders must be fully identical, including the drive letter (C: drive) or it can get confused.

Characters Counting in Segment | \N = new line

Post title: \N = new line

Hi Sarah,

Unfortunately, I cannot help with a magic regex combination, but I would like to propose a workaround.
memoQ shows the total number of characters in its downmost panel, last section.
It may look like this: 131+1/157+1
where
131 stands for the total number of chars in source,
157 stands for the total number of chars in target,
+1 stands for the total number of tags (if any) in source or target.
So you can see the chars count on the go, witout using QA.

On the other hand, \N indicates "new line".
I would split the \N segment for translation, keeping in mind that the newly splitted segment with \N may have 42 chars as a maximum (40+"\N"), and then (once translated) merge these two segments back again.

Definitely, not that comfortable as it might be with regex or other solution, but still you can see the number of characters on the go.

Characters Counting in Segment | QA setting for this purpose

Hello,

I think the following setting will meet your needs:

Resource console > QA Settings > Segments and terms > Segment length > Warn if translation is longer than (characters).

And if you confirm a "non-compliant" translation, you will see the lightening mark just below the match score (on the right side of the source/target segment).

Cheers,

MaxOO, did you read the original post?
If yes, how do I make memoQ recognize when characters "may not exceed 40" and when they "may not exceed 80" as need may be? I experience the same problem and would appreciate any such idea either.

P.S. Well, ok. You may suggest that I treat such 80-character segments as exclusions. Then next question is: how do I know it is 40+40, but not 70+10? Count characters one by one from the beginning of a segment to \N?

Empty space (unnumbered segments) in alignment grid [MQ8]

Dear all,

Sometimes, after splitting, joining or linking segments in an alignment grid, an empty space(s) (looking like unnumbered "segments") are left in between regular segments. I wonder, is there a way to remove/delete them as they are cluttering the alignment.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you Stepan for your answer. This is the solution that I am using at the moment but it is not accurate enough for my liking. I really want to quickly see if I am exceeding the number of characters allowed for each line (not overall).

Although splitting at the \N would be ideal for checking the characters, I cannot split the segments that way as it would restrict the translation in a way that will not take into account the full subtitle.

I am pretty sure that a regex can do the job, my only problem is that I am just starting with MemoQ and am not familiar enough with how to customise it.

Hi MaxOO,

I already have that QA setting set up for anything longer than 80 characters however, as per Stepan's comment above, it doesn't tell me if a line is over 40 characters.

A project package is an (almost) fixed project already having all the required settings including the languages.

I might have gotten it wrong but I didn't understand why you want to change the languages at all, be it in Studio or memoQ.

How to use the Microsoft MT plug-in in memoQ now that Microsoft Translator has moved to Azure?

I have been using the Microsoft MT plug-in in memoQ and find it one of the more accurate MT systems available. Lately, MT results for Microsoft no longer appear in the translation grid, even though the plug-in is enabled under Options. Since Microsoft Translator moved to Azure end of April this year, I no longer seem able to retrieve the Client ID + Client Secret memoQ asks for, and I am wondering if that is what has caused it to stop working.

As I was doing some research on the matter, I noticed someone developed a plug-in for Trados, and I was wondering if the same exists for memoQ? I haven't been able to find any information on this issue from Kilgray.

Has anyone encountered the same issue? Does anyone know how to deal with the Client ID + Client Secret no longer being available on the Azure Portal and what to use instead?

I haven't used Xbench 3.0, so I'm not familiar with the workflow.
I export my finished file as a "Trados-compatible bilingual DOC" file, then open it in Xbench 2.9 as a Trados Word file. I make my corrections in the source file in MemoQ, export again as a Trados Word file and run the check again if it's a long file or if the client wants a QA report. Then I export the QA results as an Excel file if the customer has requested verification of the QA.

If someone has a better solution, I'd be happy to hear it!

A better solution is to pay for the Xbench license, thus allowing ApSIC, the company that created the program, to continue developing and improving it.

Not sure what type of file mqmxl is, but try exporting bilinguals from MemoQ as (basic) mqxliff and then importing them in Xbench as xliff files.
