After losing valuable time few months ago, I have learned that memoQ pretranslates only when the target segment is empty.

What does MemoQ expect when importing a bilingual review RTF file?

Hello everyone

I often do translation or editing for MemoQ clients whereby they send me a 4-column RTF file to work on. I copy the coumn(s) to a new document, work on it, and then paste the updated text back into the original RTF file. I have over the months discovered some things that cause MemoQ to reject the files (in some cases, MemoQ apparently imports nothing, but doesn't tell the user that nothing was imported, so the user/agency then thinks that there were no edits).

For one, I've found that it is imperative that the tags are in mqInternal style. Often, when I paste content from another MS Word file, the tags in the source column change to one of the styles in the document that I paste from. If I did the actual work in e.g. Wordfast Classic, then when I paste the text, the mqInternal tags in the source column changes to tw4winExternal style, and I have to change them back to mqInternal before sending to the client.

For another, I have found that if I paste large amounts of text into the target column, then often MS Word splits the table at the insertion point, so that the first two rows form a separate table, even though there is no space between the tables. Usually, in MS Word, you can merge two tables if they have identical column widths by simply placing them directly against each other, but this trick does not work with MemoQ RTF tables. And a client's MemoQ does not accept the RFT file if it isn't literally all one table. This is extremely annoying because the way to overcome this is to paste shorter pieces of text at a time into the table.

Today I managed to keep it all one table, through some fancy copy/paste work. I did not touch the first column (where the segment numbering information is). But... the client's MemoQ doesn't import it.

So my question is: what things are required by MemoQ of the RFT file so that MemoQ accepts the RFT file and actually imports stuff from it? If there is a list of such requirements, then translators who use the RTF method can try to ensure that their files conform to the unforgiving CAT tool's specific requirements, and hopefully make life easier for their clients (for happy clients are keepers).

Thanks
Samuel

The client was able to fix it. Apparently the table's formatting got changed (indeed, the table borders went from black to grey when I saved the file). So... what table formatting does MemoQ require to import?

I'm afraid I don't know of any list of requirements. Why do you even copy the column(s) to a new document? At my previous company, we used to open the RTF with MS Word and that worked just fine. And can Wordfast not process memoQ XLIFFs?

TM Out of Memory MemoQ 7.8.161

I'm getting the error message "The signature appears as confirmed in your document, but it has NOT been added to the translation memory!" And when I try to repair the TM (which has a lightning bolt by it) I get "The translation memory cannot be reindexed. [name of TM] Out of memory." Surely this can't be literally true—I've only had this TM for a year or so. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Did you try the "repair source" option? I use memoQ 2015 and I am not familiar with the version you are using. But I believe that there is a same or similar functionality in all versions. You can access is via the translation memories screen.

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best ones. I received a similar message some time ago and it disappeared after restarting my PC. It wouldn't hurt to try:)

Lookup shortcuts

I just noticed that when using CTRL+[0-9] to quickly add the lookup results from TM/TB, most of the times something else gets inserted in the target segment (even in different languages)... Double clicking on the lookup result works as expected.

Anyone else has been experiencing this?

P.S. The MQ version I'm using is 7.8.164

I've also experienced strange phenomena with a shortcut in I-don't-remember-which-program only to realise that the same combinations were used for several applications, including some running in the background.
I seem to remember that particular shortcut interfered with a Dragon shortcut.

Try exiting all background apps and see whether this behaviour changes.

Hope it helps.

I find MemoQ is occasionally subject to memory leaks which fill the RAM and give various "out of memory" errors. The solution I find is usually to close and restart MemoQ. If your work appears in the target text you should not lose it by closing MemoQ, it should restart where you left off. Then you can select all (Ctrl+Shift+A) and commit all to the TM (Ctrl+Enter).

Recently the plugin stopped working and is now throwing the following error message at all times when it tries to connect to the Language Terminal - “Something went wrong with the Language Terminal Server. Error in the provider Language Terminal.”
What is actually wrong and how do I make it work again?

might've found the issue.

the OP in this thread is dealing with what i'm dealing:
[url removed]

so, i have no active machine translation plugins nothing is ticked/configured on that list. and i don't know which one (if any) is free / good.

crosslang gateway MT
googleMT
etc.

i have activated and use the MyMemory plugin that i thought would do this, but that's in "TM plugins," not at the "Machine Translation" -selection. in studio, it pulls the machine translations and prepopulates with them - either gTranslate, or a human one, if such exist in their database. in memoQ, no such luck.

so what IS the difference between "TM plugins" and "Machine Translation?"

which one of the API vendors provides a free / good Machine Translation?

cheers.

that a good machine translation can be free and vice versa (except MyMemory). I use GoogleMT. They have free translation threshold and then charge a rather small payment for ACTUAL translations. I don't know its performance in other domains except medical and legal texts but undoubtedly Google MT helps to increase productivity and the quality in my main domains and languages is satisfactory. Of course these are my 2 cents only.

Just be mindful that using the Google MT plugin is not in breach of your NDA or other privacy agreement with the client. I have a client (agency) that specifically forbids me to use that plugin (as it is webbased and retains your information somewhere online). I also use Microsoft which seems to need more post-editing than Google but can still be useful in standardised texts. It's not free either but I don't think it's super expensive.

that Google retains information but before pretranslation I redact all identifiable names and titles and thereafter re-insert them. Of course, it takes some time but in my book is worth every minute:) Regarding standard texts: in medicine (my main field) all texts are more or less standardized ones because of detailed official termbases, style guides, and glossaries.

well - i've been relying on google MT a lot via MyMemory on studio.

and back in the early days bing was caught using google translate to provide their results. ;-)

nonetheless, i just tried to create an account on microsoft azure for MT, but failed. all the tutorials about it are for an old version that either is or is being deprecated.

yes, i do find MT to be quite helpful in speeding up the work. and won't be doing much memoQ until i've sorted this out. why do they not have similar MyMemory functionality as is in studio with the plugin?

I don't like post-editing and never accept PE projects. However, I must admit that having read the thread, I was curious about the MT plugins or however they are called. I use memoQ 2015 and when I checked the Help section, I understand how to activate a plugin. However, I cannot find these plugins :D

I performed several google searches using keywords like "google translate MT plugin memoQ 2015 machine translation". No luck. All I can get are old posts which do not lead me anywhere useful. I also checked the google translate website and the chrome plugin pages.

I cannot find them and, actually, I don't know what do I have to look for exactly. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you looking for the plugin within MemoQ or for a subscription to actually use the plugin?

First case: Options > Machine Translation

I hope that you have figured out how to find a plugin. Just in case: Options>Machine translation>options for a particular plugin. My advice: try Google as it has no monthly advance payments and quotas like Microsoft.

Good luck!
