Post title: The problem is in MS Office

I had the same problem and I got into contact with memoQ support. They said that most likely the problem was with my MS Office. This is what they wrote to me:
It might have to do with a discrepancy between Word being 32 bit version whereas memoQ being a 64 bit version.
You could try to install the 64 bit version of Word instead of the 32 bit (if you have a 32 bit version).
Another advice was:
- Close memoQ.
- Open the "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\MemoQ" folder. (This is a hidden folder by default, you need to enable the "Show hidden files and folders" option in Windows.)
- Delete the DockLayoutConfigs.bin; Preferences-editor.xml; Preferences-layout.xml; Preferences-lookup.xml files.
Hope it will help you

BUT! Never ever delete-delete files from something you use to make money.

Create a subfolder and move them there instead.

Voila, reversibility!

How comfortable (or not) are extra large curved ultrawidescreen monitors with MemoQ? | Just my two cents

Post title: Just my two cents

We in the office use memoQ as our main tool and spend all day translating with it. We have tried to work with widescreen monitors several times in the past, but find it more comfortable to work with a more traditional aspect ratio.

This is just a personal opinion, but also the view of my colleagues here in my translation office: it feels more comfortable that, when you work with the grid, you have shorter lines / more lines instead of longer lines / fewer lines for each segment. The shorter lines (and the subsequent "taller" presentation of each segment) helps in checking the segments side by side, at least in European languages (I have no experience at all with non-Latin scripts).

Also, if you use a lot of termbases and your TMs are ample and/or have several TMs you use in jobs, a taller screen shows you more translation results in the Results pane and you have to scroll around less in this way than with a widescreen monitor. Another thing we experienced is that widescreen monitors make it less confortable to work with reference documents that come in portrait formats, so you scroll around a lot more than with a more square monitor.

All in all, I (and 3 other people here in the office) prefer a bigger, more square monitor than a wider monitor. This is of course just our personal experience and not the result of a scientific study on the matter, so there could be other views here.

(As for memoQ itself, it lends itself well to any monitor format with no major issues).

MemoQ 9.6 plus a gazillion tabs in browser and 20+ open word documents run fine on a 4th Gen i5 from, like, 7-8 years ago.

It isn't your memory or your processor, it is your internet.
For whatever reason, memoQ is a bandwidth hog, and the way it is programmed is it does whatever it does WHEN YOU CONFIRM A SEGMENT.

I actually end up running streaming music with wifi off via 4G LTE from my phone while working, because otherwise memoQ lags noticeably on segment confirmation. Yes, versus running same wifi on a different device like said phone.

If you have family members watching streaming video, kick them off or upgrade your ISP.

I didn't intend to fullscreen the memoQ window.

I was thinking of running it side by side with browser/reference pdfs/word docs open in the other half of the screen.

Makes sense. Personally I would favour two "square" monitors instead, but, again, just my personal experience! There will surely be other approaches.

Hi, I'm using 27 inch monitor and 70% of the screen is occupied by memoQ and 30% - browser with online engineering glossary. Sometimes I use browser to check some terms/abbreviations, but 30% of the width is not really comfortable for it. And for real web search I'm using another browser window with 100% width.
So my guess that 34 inch will be just perfect for this.

Hi all!

I've been thinking of buying the new MacBook Air with the ARM-based M1 processor, but close to half of my work is done in MemoQ, which has features that I'm unwilling to abandon. Yet I want this silent and compact powerhouse for a travel lifestyle. So I ask anyone with experience of using MemoQ on an M1 MacBook to share their thoughts. Does it work at all with ARM Windows? Or should I wait until the officially supported Win release?

Any feedback would be much appreciated. Great day, y'all! 😁

I too use 27". I was afraid that with a bigger screen I might be wearing out my cervical vertebrae by inadvertently turning my head, back and forth, all day long.

I am currently workding on two 27" monitors but think that I might be better with two 24" monitors. I really don't see much advantage in the larger screens. 19" on the other hand would be too small. However, two or three 24" monitors, would I think be perfect (and save money).

MemoQ Multilingual Excell Import Problems

Hi!

I am having troubles importing certain columns from the Excell sheet to my MemoQ. I have selected the columns which I wish to import: B column as a source text and C column would be my translation text. Here comes the problem: I can select the "Translation", but MemoQ doesn't save it. Therefore, it doesn't import the document as there is no "Translation" column.

Remember that after specifying “Meaning of selected column” as “Translation” you have to indicate the source column in the “For column” drop-down list.

Hi y'all!

I'm using memoQ translator pro 9.6, and I would like to create a view containing the documents in a specific order that has nothing to do with the available filters, i.e. NOT alphabetical or size or status or whatever.
Is there a way to arrange them in the order I want for a new view?

My specific situation: I have a document the customer sent to me in separate smaller documents, but in the end they have to be in a certain order. The documents are different formats, otherwise I could just make one document in word and import that and work on that, but that doesn't work.

I'd prefer working through them in the prescribed order, but have them all in one document for auto-propagate because there are quite a few repetitions.

Yes, I am aware that I can work through them separately and then pre-translate the next one and so forth, but when I want to change something that repeats later, I have to keep doing that, plus I can't see my progress in real time.

Anyone have a tip on how to do that?

Thanks and have a great evening!
Anke

Thank you Tomasz,

I have tried this, but it doesn't give me an option. If I select "Context", "Source Text" or basically anything else, it works just fine. The only thing it doesn't let me select is the "Translation".

I have also tried another option: basic 2 language text, but the Excell file is locked, therefore it just imports the first sheet.

First you say: I can select the "Translation"
Then you say: The only thing it doesn't let me select is the "Translation".
Which one of these statements is correct?
You should select B and mark it as Source text. Then you select C and mark it as Translation/For column B/Target language.
What is a 'basic 2 language text'? Which Excell file is locked (and where)?
Can you attach a screenshot?

Hi!

Thank you! I have solved it.

Alternatively, I tried to import it as a bilingual document, where you have an option to say: all columns B are "Source Text" and all columns C are "Translation". In this case, it imported just the first sheet. When I checked the Excell, if it's possible to save every sheet as a separate document, I noticed that this was not an option, as the document was protected for this kind of changes.
