use the word "impossible" for everything I can't do. Most (99%) probably this is what others can or even have already done :)

Sticking to the same concept, I accept that your workflow may be very good in some difficult cases.

Post title: Comments about the workflow for translating projects with lots of repetitions

Hello, Stepan,

Thanks for all the comments.

I agree, the word "impossible" is not suitable here.

As Stepan correctly said, it is in fact possible to translate a project with a lot of repetitions using a view of First Segment Occurrences (i.e., non-repetitions and first occurrences of repetitions). Using this shortened workflow, you create a view of First Segment Occurrences on the basis of selected documents, translate this view, and when you have thoroughly reviewed the translation and confirmed the segments to the TM, you pretranslate all documents from the TM and finalize the translation. Sounds easy, right? Well, it's not quite easy if you factor in such things as sharing with colleague translators, review by an external proofreader, and several other things.

If you want to share your view of First Segment Occurrences with a colleague, you need to export the view to a bilingual format (MQXLZ or XLIFF) and send it to the colleague with a note like 'Translate from segment X to segment Y'. You can also optionally lock segments you don't want your colleague to translate before exporting the view, and unlock them afterwards.

When your colleague receives the bilingual file, he/she imports it into their CAT tool and translates it. There are three important limitations here:
1) The translator does not know the context of each segment. Even though all segments appear in the original document order, there are no repetitions, which might be the actual context for a given segment. Without seeing the context, it may be difficult to translate a segment. To make matters worse, if the translator tries to find the segment inside the document to check the context, there may be several occurrences of this segment (because the view contains only first occurrences of repeating segments), so the translator may not be able to provide a context-sensitive translation, or warn the main translator that other repetitions of this segment require a different translation based on context.
2) Even if you send the translator an MQXLZ file which should contain a preview, and the translator also uses memoQ, he/she will not see any preview. This is due to a memoQ limitation related to exported filtered views.
3) If the translator decides to join or split segments, they will not be able to do this because this capability is disabled for filtered views in memoQ.
They may, however, be able to do this if they use another CAT tool.

After the external translator translates their part of the view, they create a view of the segments they translated, export this view to a bilingual file and send this view to the main translator who holds the master file. The main translator imports this view as a new document (memoQ will not update the original view of First Segment Occurrences because the second translator created a view rather than exporting the whole document). Then, the main translator reviews the translation and saves each segment to the TM, and then pre-translates the First Segment Occurrences view from the TM. There are some things to note here:
1) The main translator must use 100% setting for pre-translation because the context around the segments in the document received from the second translator is different compared to the context for segments in the master view of First Segment Occurrences (because the context in a view is defined by the actual context in the document from which the view was created, while the context in the document received from the second translator is defined by segments preceding or following a given segment).
2) If the second translator joined or split segments in another CAT tool, the main translator must perform the same, otherwise there will be no match from the TM. Because joining and splitting in a filtered view is not possible in memoQ, the main translator may need to copy/paste parts of the segments from the document he/she received from the second translator.

On small projects, if you share work with a limited number of translators and the source documents do not exhibit segmentation problems, the points I mentioned above should not present any significant difficulties. As the number of documents and amount of repetitions grows, the project may become unmanageable if the above shortened workflow is used. Our workflow allows to avoid all the above issues because:
1) You export individual documents with locked repetitions, and can then update your memoQ project from bilingual files received from other translators.
2) Because you export individual documents rather than filtered views, the other translators can join/split segments as they like, which is critical if documents were not formatted well or if they were not segmented correctly during the project preparation stage.
3) Because you export individual documents rather than filtered views, the other translators can see document preview if they use memoQ.
4) The other translators can see the context for the segments they translate, even when this context is locked because it represents repetitions.

But does it make sense to use the shortened workflow if you are the only translator on the project and don't need to share work? It does, but you need to consider the following restrictions:
1) As explained above, it is impossible to join/split segments in filtered views, so you need to segment the project thoroughly before you create the view of First Segment Occurrences. If you later need to join / split segments, you can actually remove the view, join/split segments in the original document(s) and then create the view again, but this will take additional time and may need to be done several times.
2) During translation, you can only determine the context of a segment based on preview, since the view of First Segment Occurrences may not contain the full context of a segment due to repetitions. Therefore, make sure that memoQ creates previews during document import.
3) If you work with an external proofreader (some of whom prefer to use bilingual RTF format for proofreading), keep in mind that the proofreader may not be able to see the full context of a segment as they review your translation of First Segment Occurrences, and may find it difficult to find the segment in the original document for the reasons mentioned above.

Again, our workflow is free of the above limitations.

I would like to note that we decided to not include sections on sharing work with other translators and on external proofreading to keep the workflow shorter. However, if there is enough interest, we can include these in a future revision of this workflow.

Best regards,
Stanislav

Hello Stepan,

Thank you for your post.

In Trados, there is an option where you can export the segments which are not in the TM and work on them or just send them to a translator without losing the repetitions.

It is when you are analyzing in Trados, there is an option with "Export Unknown Segments" option.

Here is the description and link:

""Unknown Segments
Export Unknown Segments
When this option is selected, the analysis process copies all segments for which there is no translation memory match to an XLIFF file for translation. A separate XLIFF file is produced for every language pair. The XLIFF files are placed in the project's Exports folder.
The XLIFF files can be translated and the translation units added to the translation memories before work begins on other project tasks.""

Post title: Sort by length (memoQ 2013)

I am not sure about later versions, but in memoQ 2013 it works this way:

1. Sort segments by "Target text length (shorter first)"
2. Scroll down to find the nearest target segment containing any text
3. Select it, press and hold Shift, find the last segment and click it. This will give you a selection of all segments that contain any text in their target part (if 'known' is what you mean).
4. Lock the selection by Ctrl+Shift+L.
5. Export to rtf with the 'Include locked segments' box unchecked.

Hi

I have memoQ 2013 R2 and now, with the new Language Terminal, I can't back up my projects anymore or click on the "open profile" link on the Dashboard. I get an error message that says:

Kilgray doesn’t mention anything about it in their FAQ, but maybe the new Language Terminal is only compatible with recent versions of memoQ, eg. 2014 and 2015? Have you asked support about it?

memoQ exporting source text even though it's translated

I am trying to export a file translated into German in memoQ. It is translated, confirmed and final in memoQ but when I export the file, it exports in English in certain sections. The text defaulting back to English are auto-fill selections/boxes in Word. If I export the bilingual rtf, the text is correct, but for some reason these macro sections keep defaulting to English.

Has anyone dealt with this before? For now, I will simply copy the text from memoQ into word (luckily it's only 2 pages) but I can't risk this happening again!

Based on your post, it appears the original file was a Word document. If so, which exact format: DOCX, DOC or RTF? If it was DOCX, you could try to save it as DOC, reimport it in memoQ and retranslate it (should be very fast, since all translations should be in your TM). If it was DOC, save it to DOCX.

If that doesn’t help, contact support and send them the document in question.

The only workaround I found was removing the 'content control' status from such entries. For example, by saving docx as doc (as suggested by Dominique above). Though memoQ imports such entries and shows their translation in preview pane, it does not export them in normal (not bilingual) mode. Very confusing indeed. Other tools behave more unambiguous in this regard: just tried to open the same document in sdl; sdl skipped those content control entries. Maybe I miss some checkbox or settings, not sure...

Helle,

I had the same problem with my MemoQ 2014 R2. I asked for their support on this issue to which I received the following answer.

---Quote---
It is not compatible with older versions than memoQ 2015. This means you will be able to work with the new LT, if you upgrade to that version, otherwise it is not going to work.
---Unquote---

So now I choose "Save backup to a file" option instead of "Store backup online in Language Terminal", and then drag that project file to the "Add memoQ project backup" box on the Project Backup page in the new LT - Tools.

I haven't asked the MemoQ support if it's the right way to do it, but so far it works.

Forward confirmation in MemoQ

Hi,

I'm proofreading a long translation with a lot of repetition in MemoQ 2014.
To start with, I reset the status of all the segments to "unconfirmed" so I could see my progress. Now when I confirm a segment, only the current one is confirmed even if there are 100% matches further on in the text. Can I set MemoQ to confirm all 100/101% matches forward of the current segment once I have confirmed it?

Thanks a lot in advance for any useful tips.

Today, I updated to memoQ 2015, and for the first time ever I encountered this problem. So each time I try to confirm a segment and continue to next untranslated segment with Ctrl+Enter, I get the error message “Failed to confirm segment. General error” with the following details:

TYPE: System.ApplicationException
MESSAGE: BeginBatchLookupBest is called when activeBatchQuerySessions is not null.

However, like in the previous messages, I can confirm two or more segments simultaneously with Ctrl+Enter.

(Deactivating autopropagation did not help.)

This must be corrected immediately by memoQ!

Post title: Use Multilingual delimited text filter

Hello,

You are using the standard Excel filter. Instead, after you click Import with Options, click Change filter and configuration, select Multilingual Delimited Text Filter from the Filter list, and then configure the filter on the second tab. To do this, write down the letter names of each column (A, B, etc) in Excel before doing this.

Configurating the filter is quite intuitive, but if you have issues, there are several video tutorials on this (Kilgray's webinars) as well as memoQ help files.

Help with Excel filter options

Hello!

I've been having some problems importing xls files on MemoQ.

I've imported the column translation and the column length without problems but I need to import more context and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Some information about my excel file:

A = order number
E = source
G = target (filled with the source text)
H = length
I = (not relevant)
J = comments
L = context
M = more context

(There are some hidden columns)

I need to import the column G as translation, the column H as length and columns J, L and M as context and what I've done is:

Import with options > Change filter and configuration >

Importable ranges and general options: Here I selected only the option "skip hidden rows and columns" and on include or exclude ranges > import only these ranges > (Sheet!G1:G1500) [Good result]

Comment and context options:
>Import comments > Relative position C: +1 R: 0 [Good result for length restrictions]
>Import context IDs > Custom rules >

Sheet!J1:J1500 C: +3 R: 0
Sheet!L1:L1500 C: +4 R: 0
Sheet!M1:M1500 C: +5 R: 0

[Problem: this context (J,M,L) is not shown on comments]

I would like to know if anyone is used to treat this kind of documents and what is the correct way to do it, please.

Thanks in advance,

J M A.

I experienced a like problem with a damaged TM (I had to restart my pc when memoQ was confirming a huge bundle of segments).
Try to disconnect your primary TM and add any other TM.
If this doesn't happen with the other TM, then try to restore your primary TM. At the end of the day, I had to export my TM after restoration to TMX, then create an empty TM and then import the tmx into that new TM.
P.S. Now I recall that it happaned exactly after I switched from an older version 4 to a newer 5. Yeap, try to re-import your TM or even re-create your project.
