Thanks for the clarification. As a fairly new user of memoQ (and CAT tools in general) I will have to play around a bit more with the functionalities.

I want to be able to quickly view the original document I am translating at the moment, and wonder if there is any shortcut for that from the editing view? Or else, how do I download the original files from the server project I'm working on now? The purpose is to get more context by viewing each of the many different files separately.

There is some alternatives on the Project home page (right-click, Export, Export (stored patch)), but I'm not sure if I can use those.

You can view your documents in the view pane

1. if these source documents are originally in word, xml etc. simple formats - you can find a list of file formats in memoQ help menus.

2. if you have these word etc. source files in your project files, that is, you are the person who created the project.

I am not sure about the online projects but I assume that you would need a special permission to get access to such files and it is probably much easier to ask the client to send these files in word, pdf etc. formats.

Alignment (DE>EN) in LiveDocs putting more than one sentence in each segment, sometimes up to 10 | Thanks for your help

Thanks for your comment.

In the end I managed to fix the issue by cloning the segmentation rules for EN and DE and setting them to ignore colons, as well as repairing the source Word documents (and Word found a lot of table issues!). I've now been able to re-run the alignment and the result looks a lot better with only minor alterations necessary.

Best wishes,

Laura

Hi folks.

I have received a MemoQ file containing several files that have already been translated. I have been asked to look through the files and fix any segments that do not correspond to each other (source and target segments). There are several that I have found where this is the case.

Alignment does not seem to work because I do not have the two files (source and target), they are already combined.

I do not seem to be able to just go into the Translation mode and Split a segment, it will not let me. That is what I would really like to do, split a segment and have everybody else move down one. Of course, this happens at several places so I would need to do it again and again.

So, I am stuck, I do not even know what I do not know.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to an article that covers this or has someone already done it?

All contributions gratefully accepted.

Thanks,
cantrell

Please go to View Pane > Review, and click "Show changes in editor." You may be able to see the overwritten translation even after the source was copied.

If so, go back to the first segment, select the source with the cursor, and press Control + Shift + End (all the segments are selected). Then, right-click and select "Revert to Earlier Version."

I hope this will help.

We tried this (my client and I) - unfortunately no versions were kept.

I am working with a project using an online TM but then need to add a local TM (the same as the online TM) as the connection to the server TM doesn't work very well. But in the list with TMs there is only the option to Create/use new, no option for adding a local TM. So I wonder what the procedure is to add a local TM in the list that I can use in this project?

There's a button called "Register local" next to Create/Use New. Click Register local and select an existing TM.

Not sure if anyone replied to this point already, as I haven't read all three pages of this thread. But anyway, there is a way to back up your work. And I was VERY happy to have done it in the last "group-share" server-based MemoQ job I did. As my final step before synchronizing for the last time and delivering the job, I saved a local copy of the files. I can't remember how I did it though, and I can't find the option now -- I think I exported a bilingual version or active version or something.

It was a relief to have the files as a backup when the client came back to me and said that they didn't have my translation because when it synchronized the files it completely reverted the files back to their original state. While the translation was in the TM, it was one of those fiddly jobs that really couldn't just be automatically translated from the TM, so I think all parties were relieved when I sent through local copies of the final files with translations firmly in place!

It depends the source of your TM.
If it is one file with TMX extension, then you have to Create a New TM and import this TMX file into it.
If your TM is a folder with around 10 files in it - then Register local, as you've been told already

Indeed. That, or remap Ctrl-Shift-S to something else (in my case Ctrl-Shift-V), to keep it FAR from Ctrl-Shift-A. Not sure why Kilgray decided to map 2 functions that combined together have a potentially disastrous effect so close one to the other...

Manually backing up your work can't really protect you from unforeseen events that may happen while you're working, unless you do that every 5 minutes...

MemoQ 2015: How can I create a new TM from a bilingual document?

Hi all,

Please excuse me, in the first place, if the topic has been covered before. If so, I have been unable to find it (therefore, if this is the case, I would be very grateful if somebody points me in the correct direction).

The point is that I am about to finish a big project on a specific field (namely, tracked excavators), for which I have been using quite a number of TMs for other, earlier projects for the same client and for wheeled excavators; other projects in this very same field are about to arrive and I would prefer to set up a new TM for this new (tracked vehicles) subject matter which I would then expand with the oncoming projects.

Therefore (after completing this project, and once I have a fully spellchecked and QAed bilingual, I would like to create a new TM that (initially) contains ONLY this project.

How can I do that?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there!

Do you mean that you are finishing the final good bilingual file inside of memoQ? If that is the case, you can simply create a new memory, disable other memories, select all segments in your file and Confirm. That will populate the new memory with the final contents of your bilingual file.

Hi, Tomás

Thanks for the supersonic speed in answering in the first place. Yes, this is exactly what I mean. I am finishing a project in memoQ, for which I am using quite a number of TMs and wish to create a new TM specific for the subject. therefore you have hit the nail in the head (although there are a number of files there, rather than one; in fact, it is a .pdf for which I have received a number of sdlxliff PARTIAL files; Understand that Best way is to begin exporting the first one as a bilingual rtf and do as you say and then doing the same with the remaining files, one by one, into the same (new) TM?.

Going to finish the project right now. Will report on results.

Gracias mil, Tomás.

Marcel

In memoQ, you can also create a view with all the finished files, then go to the Views tab and open your file, that is now glued-together. With a new TM created, and after unticking the rest, select all segments and confirm. That should do it!

(Yo do not even need to export or anything: create a new memory, select all segments in memoQ, click Confirm or use your usual shortcut for confirming. If after that you do to the TM, select it and click Properties, you should see that the TM is now populated with your segments. You can also choose Edit and have a look if you wish!)

Take care, Marcel!

Post title: Another method - LIveDocs

Hi -
There is another way to accomplish the same thing, and in some cases it may be preferable.
Open the bilingual file in LiveDocs. This gives you two options:
1. Create a new TM as suggested earlier in this thread. Then select the document and execute "Export to TM...".
2. You can also use the LIveDocs with or without your existing TM, and you will know what comes from TM and what comes from LiveDocs by observing the icon in the Translations pane.

This nice thing about option 2 is that you don't mess up your existing TM, and you can easily jump to the original document by right clicking on the icon and selecing "Show document". I use this all the time, and that last feature is a big plus. When the translation doesn't make sense, I check the document and can see the entire context. You can't do that with TM.

Cheers!
George

Thanks Stepan:

That worked for me too (DE-EN) after several unsuccessful attempts with other strategies. It is weird, but one would have thought the second language should be imported as the definition. I guess memoQ 'defines definition' differently!

This is one of those things that is an exception to memoQ's otherwise superb ease of use.
