Unless you plan to share the memory with other people, what you basically need is a backup solution that works automatically. In my case, for my workstation and for my team's server, etc. I use Acronis, which is very easy to use and not expensive at all. You might have to contact a reseller, depending on your home market.

I do not think a memoQ cloud server is for you, since you do not mention working within a team. A memoQ cloud server is ideal for small permanent teams of for ad-hoc teams created for large, temporary projects. If you generally work alone, you do not really need a memoQ server, in my opinion.

Does the thing (and the automated solutions you mentioned) offer file synchronization (uploading to the cloud) on a current/very frequent basis? I'd like to avoid situations where I lose several hours of work due to PC failure (did happen to me already in the past). In such case, if using a cloud, I could just jump on wife's PC and continue working to meet the deadline.

I was also thinking of installing some software tool that would automatically copy the MemoQ TMs to a memory card for recovery purposes. Does anyone use this type of magic 'round here? Freeware solutions would be welcome.

I've never actually used it, but check it out and see if it offers anything that meets your needs.

And, well, auto-sync backups are always an option.

Post title: Online backup

I have used online backup for many years. There are many providers, some less good than others. The files and folders you specify are backed up on an ongoing basis by most such providers without any need for you to do anything.

Some providers keep a number of different versions. How many depends on the service. Some providers also keep files and folders that have been deleted from your computer, most only for a month, but some keep them forever or until you remove them from the backup set.

Restore of a few files is nearly instant.

There are some free providers. I prefer to pay for a provider that corresponds to my needs. I provide a professional service, so I depend on my own providers to do the same.

I have been using Crashplan for many years. It works and performs well, and support is good, but I hate the new grey-in-grey, dumbed-down smartphone-style user interface they forced upon their PC users a year ago, and so do many other clients according to support.

These are the default MemoQ folders you need to back up:

TBs, TMs, and other resources:
C:\ProgramData\MemoQ

Settings:
C:\Users\{user}\AppData\Roaming\MemoQ

Projects:
C:\Users\{user}\My Documents\My memoQ Projects

In addition, you need to back up your own user folders.

You can omit the AppData folders, but if you have them, you can install the software and your folders, and you have essentially migrated your entire MemoQ installation with all its projects to another computer. I wrote a detailed set of instructions for it in another forum post. Migrating this way is unsupported, but it worked fine for me.

As far as I understand auto-sync, it keeps files synchronised in two different locations, so if files are damaged or deleted in one location, they'll quickly be damaged or deleted in the other location too. This should not be confused with backup.

Thanks a lot, fellow translator! I'll check it out, as well as maybe some other tools. In fact, what would suffice in my case is auto-copying files to an SD card. The chance of the SD card getting corrupted due to PC failure is pretty much 0%, unless there is some power surge - but the chance of this happening is also pretty much 0%, so 0+0 gives a 0 (are you with me with those complicated probability calculations?). This is the type of thing that should be possible with freeware, or at least "cheapware".

For the record, just encountered this problem and my solution was:
1. Uncheck all existing corpora from the project.
2. Exit the project.
3. Find the project file XXXX.mprx
4. Open it with any editor (Notepad etc.)
5. Delete everything between the lines (CorpusList) and (/CorpusList)
6. Open project and check in the corpora you want again.

(This obviously applies only to offline projects.)

I have been using a third-party filter that can be added to MemoQ for importing and exporting Memsource mxliff files. It seems to work well, and retains the statuses and match values. Details can be found here:

MemoQ extremely slow in typing

Hi there, anyone has experienced a sudden, extreme slowness of MemoQ in typing? Since New Year, Mr. MemoQ 8.3.8 is gone in slow-sloth mode and takes ages to visualise what I type. Needless to say, if I happen to have a large job I'm toasted. Luckly now I only have a 360-word one, so it cannot be slow because it's a huge file - no images, nothing strange. Just slow.
Any suggestion? thanks!

MemoQ translation units lost upon synchronisation

Poster: Dr. Julian Keogh

I recently worked on a larger translation in memoQ for a client consisting of about 65000 words spread across about 20 odd thousand translation units. I was a second editor on the project. I chose to work both in the web server version of memoQ where the project was set up, as well as the software version on my laptop. the reason i did this was because the translation was mostly of a table, and in the server version the TUs can be confirmed much more quickly. the software version however allows autopropagation of changes, which was very handy since about 50% of the translation actually originated from multiple repetitions of the same strings.

Any way I did not split or join any segments, so the number of TUs in the translation wass always constant.

After working several days and synchronising on the web server, it appears that a large number of translation units simply disappeared from the server version, and it seems that the ones that disappeared were mostly ones that I had already confirmed, since the server was reporting only a small proportion of the TUs as confirmed after the sync. When I worked on the software version, it didnt take long for my local copy to sync and also report as being much smaller. Two days later the same thing happened again upon synchronisation from the web server app, and the translation was somehow reduced to 22500 words.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with this? And how was the matter resolved ? This is not only annoying but bad for my reputation, being the second editor it disturbs me that somehow a lot of the already performed translation seems to have irrevocably disappeared, and initially the gun is pointing at my head after all since I was the one who synced the work.

Sounds a bit unclear to me.

- web server?
- a large number of translation units simply disappeared from the server version?

As long you have the "confirmed" or saved segments, you still can reset them to edit and add to a TM again.
- Windows roll-back?
- Local or remote projecte/TMs ?
- Any backups made from MemoQ or windows backups?
- A corrupted TM, just disabled by MemoQ?
- " web server, it appears that a large number of translation units simply disappeared from the server version, and it seems that the ones that disappeared were mostly ones that I had already confirmed" maybe by accident a local TM used?

Here are screenshots of some of the annoying messages I receive:

[Edited at 2019-01-28 05:19 GMT]
The connection is not only on your side and the slowest bit (wherever it is) defines the connection speed.
However, assuming, licensing and all is fine, it's looking more like a connection issue on your side ... DNS. Two boxes at the same time. DNS not resolves both servers (not the speed).
You can try to ping some different servers: open a CMD ant type: ping com [enter]
ping the same way some other servers, sites : ping [you translation.server] ....... the project server. You get a reply something like this?
ping
PING ( [IP removed] ) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from hkg12s11-in-f4.1e100.net ( [IP removed] ): icmp_seq=1 ttl=55 time=28.7 ms
64 bytes from hkg12s11-in-f4.1e100.net ( [IP removed] ): icmp_seq=2 ttl=55 time=27.3 ms
64 bytes from hkg12s11-in-f4.1e100.net ( [IP removed] ): icmp_seq=3 ttl=55 time=27.4 ms
64 bytes from hkg12s11-in-f4.1e100.net ( [IP removed] ): icmp_seq=4 ttl=55 time=29.7 ms

I assume, you will get something like this:
Name or service not known or timed outP
If you have computer in your network, you also can do aping: ping other.computer. A replay with numbers and times, will show you, where exactly the error is.
No other computer or network printer, then is a bit more difficult. But instinct tells me, it's inside your local network - between your pc and router

In this case, it's your LOCAL onnection, before your router and if this is fine, then it looks like a matter for your ISP

Hello,

I download XTM project as XLIFF file and work on XLIFF file in memoQ.
However, memoQ automatically import M (match) or I (ICE match) segments as "reviewed", showing double check mark and I can't edit these segments at all even though I sometimes need to.

Does anyone know how to disable the double check mark in memoQ so that I can edit?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

I'm not a MemoQ user.

If I understand this post correctly:

...this may be a known problem with MemoQ. If the person who created the XLIFF file chose to lock segments, then you may not be able to unlock them. You may in fact also be unable to unlock segments that you yourself have locked. (The post relates to MemoQ XLIFF files, so maybe it doesn't relate to your generic XLIFF files.)

I suspect you should be able to unlock the segments by editing the XLIFF file in a text editor, but that's hacking. I have had to do such edits to XLIFF files that I downloaded from XTM in the past in order to be able to use them correctly in OmegaT, and the XTM server accepted my edited XLIFF files even though I had tinkered with the segment statuses. But this is an "own risk" procedure that you would perform either on the original XLIFF file or on the MemoQ MQXLIFF file.

I suppose part of your question is: if MemoQ believes that the segment should be locked, does that mean that the client also wanted those segments to be locked? I don't know. Perhaps the client knows.

Dear all, I am helpless
I would like to ask for your help. When I create a TMX memory with LF ALigner 4.2 and import it in the MemoQ 8.4.10 translation memory, the memory then offers me a strange result of text with vertical little line tag resembling grey character, which works as a character, but can be nor copied nor exported (to stored path). This is a weird behaviour that looks like this:
"Methodology:||‭ ‬A retrospective study,||‬conducted in||‬2000-2017||in the Moravian-Silesian Region. In a population of||‬209||‬943‭||‬live births,||‬24‭||‬fruits and children with RASopatia|‭ (||0.11‭||‬/‭||‬1000|‭) ‬were diagnosed."
Can you advise me on how to get rid of these characters, most probably added somehow by the LF Aligner? Infinite thanks in advance.

I checked many options available in XTM and actually, if I use "change status" function in XTM and then download as XLIFF file I could edit all segments in memoQ!
You mentioned "XTM server" and thanks to that I came upon an idea to check the options available in XTM.
Thank you so much!
