Is it possible to show TM suggestions from different languages?

Hello,

Is it possible to show TM suggestions from different languages?

Let's say, I have a Eng document that needs to be translated both into Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese?

If Simplified Chinese is already translated, a Traditional Chinese translator would like to see the TM hit for that segment on the right hand side.

Thanks!

You can export you TM in .tmx files.
Then you can import any .tmx file(s) to any TM.
Good luck!

Angel, from within memoQ there is probably no good reason to do it, as you can use as many TMs as you like at the same time, so I'm curious to know why you should go to that trouble

Maybe, if you don't have a lot of TMs to merge and you still have the project files, you can open the projects, add your main TM and update it with the finished project. One by one, but it would work.

Any updates about a DeepL API for memoQ? I didn't find anything on Kilgray's or DeepL's websites, so I'm thinking not yet? Does anyone have any inside information on whether it's even being worked on?

Dear all,

Thank you for your feedback on the issue.

Just to let you know of the outcome: the plug-in (supplied by memoQ and ordered customised by the client) was faulty and caused the delay and other problems. After working with the memoQ service for about an hour - they realized it was their plug-in that was causing the problem.

All the best,

may I ask what are the benefits to add a monolingual doc? I know it can be done but I don't really understand why since there is no "counterparts"?

I'm having this problem the whole time now. The suggestions from the termbank appear as I hit the first letter of the word I type but disappear as soon as I hit the second. This is a big problem as I type relatively quickly. And it's very annoying.

Hi Nick
I am having exactly the same problem and would appreciate any help in solving it. The predictive typing, auto suggest, none of this is useful since the suggestions only flash for one second and are no longer available after typing the 2nd CORRECT letter.

The problem you describe has been there for at least a year.

Either they don't care to fix it or they have not been told about it. They seem to be unable to spot any bugs on their own, proactively, and without users sending them backups of their sensitive projects.

But, hey, they will release "hey memoq" soon! Their main focus these days seems to be on creating buzz on the 'interwebs'.

how to import a 2 column Word table as a bilingual document for revision/updates?

The project is to update a book, more specifically captions in an illustrated book. I did not translate the book so I have no TM for it.

I got a Word file with a succession of pictures (2 or 3) and then 2-column table GE>FR with the captions for the pictures, one caption per cell. There are various states:
- caption already translated, source and target ok
- caption already translated but some changes in the source, I have to adapt the target accordingly. The changes are highlighted.
- new caption (new picture), I have to translate.
I would like to import the bilingual text to create a TM and then update/translate the document normally.
How can I do it the best way ?
The general question is : how to import a word table as a bilingual file?
Thanks for all ideas.

You can use it in concordance searching, so if you think you want to translate a term / phrase a certain way, you can use the concordance to quickly check whether your reference document uses the term / phrase that same way. That's if your monolingual doc is in the target language, of course. I've never uploaded a monolingual doc in the source language and offhand can't think of a good reason to do so.

*
Starting from a bilingual Word table in 2 columns, left source, right target:
- convert the table to text in Word (tabulation for column separation, New line (Enter) for lines separation
- in Word, bulk-replace tab and Enter with the associated 'old-Trados' tags (the bits that used to be hidden text in purple, with curly brackets, number and lower than/higher than symbols)
- fix any faulty/missing tags (usually beginning and end)

You now have a bilingual file in 'old-Trados' format.
Save it as a DOC file (not docx).
Import it to MemoQ. MemoQ should detect a bilingual Trados .doc file and select the filter accordingly.

You should get source and target in MemoQ.

*
To create a TM out of a 2-column Word file, it's likely only a matter of converting the Word file into csv. This format can be made a TM directly in MemoQ.

Cleaner, more elegant and ethereal ways certainly exist.

Good luck,
Philippe

Thanks Philippe.
But what are exactly old Trados tags? I can see what you mean but how can I create them?

use zero for convenience, whatever font in whatever colour with whatever attributes. It doesn't matter at all.

Hope it helps,

Search-replace may look like this:

And then the needful needs doing for the beginning and the end of the doc.

Of course, if your table cells contain whole paragraphs, a whole paragraph will be a single TU (not one TU per "sentence")

I used to use this trick quite often, now not so much.

Looking into my old treasures chest, I found a nice (and free) macro collection by Arkady Vysotsky, which, among other convenient functions, allows the following format conversions:

Trados-like segmented text to Word table
Word table to Trados-like segmented text
Excel workbook to Trados-like segmented text
Wordfast TM to Trados-like segmented text
Trados TXT export to Word table
STAR Transit project to Trados-like segmented text and back
TTX (TagEditor) file to Trados-like segmented text and back

The "Trados-like segmented text" mentioned above is the old (pre-Studio) rtf bilingual format TRADOS used until version 2007. MemoQ is able to import/export it as you may see in:
